Lost a Client Over One Message? Here’s How to Fix Poor Communication Before It Kills a Deal

How Poor Communication Lost Me a Collaboration (And What You Can Learn From It)

Let’s talk about communication and how easily it can make or break a business deal.

If you’re a freelancer, consultant, or service provider, you’ve probably heard phrases like:

  • “They’re not in target.”
  • “They just didn’t get it.”

But here’s the raw truth:

IF THEY DON’T GET IT , THEY WON’T BUY IT

And they won’t ask for clarification. They’ll just walk away.

The Real Reason You Might Be Losing Opportunities

↳ Most people think they lose leads because of pricing or alignment. But more often?

You lose them because your message feels vague, the value isn’t clear, or the conversation just feels… off

Let me give you a real example.

What Happened: A Missed Collaboration

There’s nothing wrong with planning. In fact, you need a plan to set direction and expectations.
A few weeks ago, a professional named Jenny approached me on LinkedIn about a potential collaboration. And yes, I’m open to partnerships — if they’re intentional, aligned, and structured.

We were both in the “management” space, but let’s be honest: that’s a giant umbrella. I didn’t want to assume anything.

So I asked her, directly and respectfully:

  • Who do you help?
  • How do you help them?
  • What’s your delivery structure?

Simple questions, right?

Her reply?

I believe my previous message was very clear.

My face? O:
My thoughts? “Did that really just happen?”

What This Revealed About Her Offer

Instead of clarifying, she doubled down on being understood, without checking if her message was actually clear to me.

And that’s where many brilliant professionals go wrong.

Communication isn’t about clarity to yourself

it’s about clarity to OTHERS

You may think you’ve explained it well, but if your potential client walks away confused, you’ve already lost traction.

Why Clarity Is a Sales Superpower

Clear communication builds trust.
Trust drives decisions.
Decisions lead to deals.

But when your messaging is vague?

  • Opportunities vanish
  • Clients ghost you
  • Trust evaporates

Ask Yourself These 3 Simple Questions

If you’ve ever heard:

  • “Let me think about it…”
  • “Maybe later…”
  • Or just got silence…

Stop and ask yourself:

  1. Did I speak their language?
  2. Did I clearly explain the problem I solve?
  3. Did I share how I work and what results I deliver?

If not, there’s a messaging gap.

Set Boundaries Around Vague Partnerships

One of my personal rules is this:

I don’t say yes to confusion.

I value my time and energy, and I’m not interested in chasing unclear partnerships. So if someone can’t explain their offer in simple, direct terms… that’s a red flag.

Would it be for you, too?

My Personal Advice

So next time you’re explaining your offer, imagine you’re talking to a 6-year-old:

  • Use plain language
  • Skip the jargon
  • Be concrete and specific

You’ll not only close more deals, you’ll build trust faster and save energy.

Have you ever lost an opportunity because of unclear communication on either side?
